What is Breaking Bread Community?

SREHUP’s Breaking Bread Community Shelter is located in Upper Darby, in close proximity to the 69th Street Transportation Center. We are an emergency shelter for residents of Delaware County in need of services and housing help. We currently have 17 beds for adults of all ages and backgrounds,. Breaking Bread Community is the only shelter that welcomes guests to come with their 3 Ps:  Pets, Possessions, and Partners of all genders.

Breaking Bread Community Shelter (BBCS) is an emergency shelter responding to the growing need for temporary housing for individuals that are homeless in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. We offer comprehensive programs and services that promote self-sufficiency for individuals in a supportive environment of shared respect, dignity, caring, and trust.

Our Mission

Homelessness is a Human Rights Violation. Housing is a Human Right.

The mission of the Breaking Bread Community by SREHUP is to increase the inventory of affordable and accessible housing in Delaware County, PA and the surroundings areas, create opportunities for our low income communities to thrive, and challenge structures that contribute to homelessness and poverty. We work to achieve long-lasting positive changes for the community of people who are low income and experiencing homelessness by providing for this population’s immediate needs, including housing and services, and advocating for changes that will end homelessness.

Our Founder & Executive Director

Stephanie Sena is the founder and executive director of Breaking Bread Community Shelter (BBCS).  In 2011, Stephanie founded the Student-Run Emergency Housing Unit of Philadelphia (SREHUP), a non-profit homeless shelter. After a decade of operating the shelters out of church basements, BBCS has a permanent home.

“We have a responsibility to give back to our community and leave the world a better place than we found it.”
